About this place
BIROU JIMA is a small island of 4.12 hectares located about 6km off the coast of HYUGA NADA. This island is also called "BIJYOGASHIMA", a beautiful woman's island. It was named after the legend which said when a battle ship of the emperor JINMU tried to catch a whale, the whale turned into a beautiful woman who begged them not to kill her. Thanks to the ocean current KUROSHIO, this island is a well-known fishing point. This island is also known to be the world's biggest breeding ground for KANMURI UMISUZUME.
